A field guide to our glazes

We keep the glaze shelf short on purpose. Two glazes and one bare finish cover almost everything we make, and each one has been tested over dozens of runs. Here is what to expect from each.

Fog white is a satin white that goes soft and slightly cloudy where it is thick and breaks to amber where it thins over rims, ridges and throwing lines. That warm edge comes from the iron in our clay showing through. No two pieces break exactly the same, which is why we photograph by run. It is on the Tide bowl and one of the two Dune mug options.

Speckled buff is a clear satin over our speckled clay, so what you are really seeing is the clay body: a warm oatmeal tone with dark flecks from the iron and manganese in it. It reads calmer than fog white and hides coffee rings well.

Raw is the clay with no glaze at all, like the outside of the Ridge vase. We leave the throwing rings in so you can see how it was made. The inside of every vase is glazed, so it holds water without seeping.

Both glazes are lead-free, food-safe and fired to cone 6. Both hold up in the dishwasher, though handwashing keeps the satin surface looking new longer. The recipes live on the studio wall next to the test tiles.
