Glaze notes: fog white

A good white is the hardest glaze in the book. Too much zircon and it goes dead, like appliance enamel. Too little and it's just a shine. Fog white took three years and forty-one test tiles.

The trick ended up being the clay, not the glaze: a body with enough iron that the white breaks amber where it thins at rims and ridges. The pot glazes itself where it matters.

The recipe is on the studio wall and I'll tell anyone who asks. Recipes aren't the work. Ten thousand pulls on the wheel are the work.
