Sixty pieces a month, on purpose

The number that shapes everything here is sixty. That is about how many pieces come out of the kiln in a month, and it is roughly one full glaze load.

It sounds small until you count the touches. Each pot gets wedged, thrown, trimmed, handled or finished, dried, bisque fired, waxed, glazed, glaze fired, sanded at the foot, photographed and packed. That is a dozen stops, all by the same pair of hands, before it reaches your door.

We have been told to scale. Hire throwers, buy molds, fire twice as often. Every one of those would change the pots. Molds would mean identical mugs. More firings would mean less time testing. Hired help would mean a studio that needs to be managed instead of worked in.

So we stay at sixty on purpose, and we plan around it. Pieces are made in runs of a dozen. Each run is numbered, so if you love a batch you can ask what came out of it. When something sells out, it comes back in a later run, not overnight.
